A story is mostly a fictive display of non fictive events. Within photography we register moments of reality and in the same hand we manipulate this reality by choosing the view and afterwards by editing our photos.
Some time ago I have made this photograph
What is this photograph telling you. There is a real conversation between a man and a woman. It is a colourfull image. A man is sitting with a rollator and a red shoppingtrolley is waiting for someone. Or the man takes care for this. The story itself here is a bit hidden I think. The storline is a bit thin. I like the photo but you need to guess a bit what is happening. Point of my critique as well is that there is some overlap in the photo. The knee of the woman touches the coat of the woman.
What need photographers for a story
Erwin Eliot made this photo:
This one is really simple and is telling a story. Not planned I think and no colors. Just go up into the mountain. The mountain and the sign have nothing to do with each other but here in the photo they are united in one .
Henri Cartier Bresson has made this one:
Again Black and white. Simple not planned and no colors. However there are a lot of people at the funeral, the man on the pale is very obvious and the story as well.
Here a color photo of Ab Rashid
Conclusion
For a story we need the following ingredients in a photo:
-Emotion
-Colors
-Planning
-Being original
-It needs to be simple
